RECEPTIONISTS
The receptionists are trained to help you access the services you need. Sometimes it is necessary for them to ask questions to ascertain the urgency of the problem and ensure that you are seeing the appropriate health care professional.
PRACTICE NURSES
The nurses work in close co-operation with the doctors. Appointments for the practice nurses are made at reception.
The practice nurses help with general advice, dressings, suture removal, injections, travel advice, immunisation, cervical smear tests and well person medicals. They also run clinics which monitor the progress of our
patients with asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and menopause problems.
DISTRICT NURSES
A team of experienced community or "district" nurses is also attached to the practice. They are available to provide various nursing duties in the home. They can be contacted for advice or home visits, via the surgery reception.
HEALTH VISITORS
Our health visitors are based at the health centre next door but they visit the surgery daily. Their work is mainly with families with young children and they offer routine child development examinations.
A particularly useful service is the counselling they can offer to women who have experienced a miscarriage and those affected by postnatal depression.
It is often worth talking to you health visitor about any child health, illness or development problem. This may well save you needing to see the doctor.
To contact the health visitors:
Telephone 01462 684731 between 9.00am and 12 noon.
MIDWIVES
A community midwife runs an antenatal clinic weekly at the surgery, usually on Wednesday. Appointments are made at reception. Pregnant mothers can contact the midwife for advice at other times by telephoning 01438 314333 and asking for the midwives.
The doctors carry out the postnatal examination eight weeks after the birth
TRAINING
The practice is approved as a training centre for qualified doctors who wish to
pursue a career in general medical practice. These doctors work here under close
supervision for periods of up to one year. In addition, student doctors and nurses
sometimes visit the surgery as part of their training.
Every few years the surgery is visited by other doctors to ensure that standards
for training are being maintained. This visit includes an inspection of a few
randomly selected patient records.
You may ask the receptionist to ensure that your records are exempt from this check.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
The practice is actively involved in medical research and development and received a Beacon Award from the NHS for developmental work in men’s health and primary care cardiology.
